Link Building Statistics for 2026 (Sourced and Checked)
45 link building statistics on rankings, costs, outreach, tactics, AI search and Google spam, each linked to its original study and checked October 2026.
These are 45 link building statistics on rankings, costs, outreach, tactics, AI search and Google's spam fighting. Every one links to the original study or Google statement it comes from, and every source was opened and checked in October 2026.
That matters because most "link building statistics" pages copy each other. Numbers drift from one study to another, survey answers get reported as market prices, and five-year-old figures get relabelled as this year's. Where a widely repeated number couldn't be traced back to a primary source, it isn't here.
Each table gives the year the data was collected or published, so you can judge how fresh it is. Studies from 2023 onwards were preferred, and older ones are only included where nothing newer measures the same thing.
How much links matter for rankings
The big correlation studies all point the same way: pages that rank well tend to have more referring domains, and pages with no links rarely get traffic at all. None of them prove causation, and the studies say so themselves.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| 96.55% of pages in a sample of around 14 billion get no organic traffic from Google | Ahrefs search traffic study | 2023 |
| Of about 20 million pages in Ahrefs' index with no referring domains, only 2,997 get more than 1,000 search visits a month (roughly 1 in 6,671) | Ahrefs search traffic study | 2023 |
| The number one result has an average of 3.8 times more backlinks than results in positions 2 to 10 (11.8 million results analysed) | Backlinko ranking factors study | 2020 |
| Top 10 pages have a median of 6 referring domains to the URL, against an average of 112 (16,298 keywords) | Semrush Ranking Factors Study | 2024 |
| Top 10 pages have a median of 13 backlinks to the URL, against an average of 2,418 | Semrush Ranking Factors Study | 2024 |
| Link builders say it takes an average of 3.1 months to see a link's impact on rankings (755 surveyed) | Authority Hacker link building survey (archived) | 2022 |
| 64.9% of 518 SEO professionals say a site can rank high on Google without backlinks | Editorial.link link building survey | 2026 |
The gap between Semrush's medians and averages is the useful part. A handful of pages with enormous link counts drag the averages up, while the typical page in the top 10 has a modest profile, which is why how many backlinks you need depends on the pages you're actually competing with rather than an industry average.
What links cost
Link prices are hard to pin down because studies measure different things: the fee a site charges, the price a vendor charges, or the full cost of a campaign including content and labour. Read each number with its method in mind.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| The average paid link costs $83, counting only the fee paid to the site (no outreach or content costs) | Authority Hacker link building survey (archived) | 2022 |
| 74.3% of link builders pay for links | Authority Hacker link building survey (archived) | 2022 |
| Paid niche edits cost an average of $361.44, based on asking 450 sites in nine niches to sell a link | Ahrefs on buying backlinks | Before 2022 |
| Sites that charged for guest posts asked an average of $77.80 (180 sites pitched) | Ahrefs on buying backlinks | Before 2022 |
| A guest post costs an average of $295 bought directly from the site, and about $461 through a vendor (database of 500,000+ sites) | BuzzStream link building pricing | 2026 |
| A link insertion costs an average of about $179, and only around 14% of sites in the vendor database offered them | BuzzStream link building pricing | 2026 |
| Only about 1.37% of sites in that guest post database met BuzzStream's quality bar (DR or DA over 65 and over 10,000 monthly organic visits) | BuzzStream link building pricing | 2026 |
| Digital PR averages $597 per link and $5,458 per monthly contract (about 70 agencies and freelancers surveyed) | BuzzStream digital PR cost survey | 2025 |
| SEOs consider $508.95 an acceptable price for one high quality backlink (an opinion, not a market price; 412 answers) | Editorial.link link building survey | 2026 |
The pattern holds across every study: cheap links are cheap because the sites selling them are low quality, and the price rises steeply with authority and traffic. For current prices by provider and link type, see the full breakdown of link building cost, and note that paying for a link that passes ranking credit is against Google's rules (more on that in buying backlinks).
Outreach and reply rates
Outreach data comes mostly from the companies that sell outreach software, because they can see millions of sent emails. The headline is consistent: most pitches get no reply, and one well-timed follow-up makes a real difference.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| 8.5% of outreach emails received a response (12 million emails analysed with Pitchbox) | Backlinko email outreach study | 2019 |
| A single follow-up increased replies by 65.8% | Backlinko email outreach study | 2019 |
| Sequences with follow-ups get an 85% higher reply rate than single emails (over 8 million emails in 65,000 campaigns) | BuzzStream follow-up email study | 2025 |
| The reply rate to a second follow-up (0.59%) is 66% lower than to the first follow-up (1.74%) | BuzzStream follow-up email study | 2025 |
| Pitches under 300 words get more than double the reply rate of longer ones | BuzzStream email length study | 2025 |
| Only 48% of digital PR professionals always personalise their pitches | BuzzStream State of Digital PR | 2026 |
| 60.8% of digital PR professionals say finding relevant journalists got harder in the last 12 months | BuzzStream State of Digital PR | 2026 |
In practice that means short, relevant pitches and one follow-up, not three. The outreach email templates guide shows what that looks like line by line, and blogger outreach covers how to find people worth pitching in the first place.
Link types and tactics
Surveys of link builders show what people use and what they believe works. They're opinion data, so they tell you about the industry's habits more than about Google, but the shift towards digital PR is clear across several of them.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Guest posting is the most used tactic, used by 64.9% of link builders | Authority Hacker link building survey (archived) | 2022 |
| 48.6% of SEO professionals rate digital PR as the most effective link building tactic | Editorial.link link building survey | 2026 |
| 85.1% of digital PR professionals now count pitching press releases as part of digital PR, up from 72.8% a year earlier | BuzzStream State of Digital PR | 2026 |
| 78.8% of SEO professionals think nofollow links affect rankings | Editorial.link link building survey | 2026 |
| Partial match anchors are the preferred choice for 41.7% of SEOs, followed by exact match (25.1%) and branded (20.5%) | Editorial.link link building survey | 2026 |
| 63.1% of SEOs would place links on sites listed on link building marketplaces if quality were right | Editorial.link link building survey | 2026 |
| At least 66.5% of links to 2 million sites since 2013 have rotted, and 74.5% are lost for SEO purposes once other issues are counted | Ahrefs link rot study | 2024 |
Two of these are worth acting on. The rise of digital PR reflects where experienced link builders now put their budgets, and the link rot figure is a reminder that links disappear, which is why link reclamation and broken link building keep working. The anchor preferences are a survey result, not a safe ratio, so check them against the advice on anchor text.
Links and AI search
The newest research looks at what gets brands cited in AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. So far, brand mentions correlate more strongly with AI visibility than raw link counts do, although AI Overviews still lean heavily on pages that already rank.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Branded web mentions correlate at 0.664 with AI Overview brand visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks (75,000 brands, Spearman correlation) | Ahrefs AI Overview brand visibility study | 2025 |
| YouTube mentions show the strongest correlation with brand visibility across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews (about 0.737) | Ahrefs AI brand visibility correlations | 2025 |
| Being mentioned on highly linked pages correlates at 0.70 with visibility in AI Overviews, 0.40 in Perplexity and 0.12 in ChatGPT (top 50 sites in each) | Ahrefs highly linked pages study | 2025 |
| 76.1% of pages cited in AI Overviews rank in Google's top 10, and 14.4% don't rank in the top 100 (1.9 million citations) | Ahrefs AI Overview citations study | 2025 |
| An AI Overview correlated with a 34.5% lower clickthrough rate for the top ranking page (300,000 keywords) | Ahrefs AI Overviews and clicks | 2025 |
| Rerun on December 2025 data, the drop in clickthrough rate had grown to 58% | Ahrefs AI Overviews and clicks, 2026 update | 2026 |
| Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% (900 US adults) | Pew Research Center | 2025 |
| 66.2% of digital PR professionals now use digital PR to get brands mentioned in AI citations | BuzzStream State of Digital PR | 2026 |
None of this makes links irrelevant to AI search. Links still drive the rankings that AI Overviews draw from, and editorial links usually come with a brand mention attached. What changes is the goal: coverage that names the brand counts for more than a link alone, which is the case made in brand mentions and the wider AI search section.
Google and link spam
Google rarely publishes numbers about links, but its annual webspam reports and update announcements include a few. These are Google's own statements, linked to Search Central or Google's blog.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| The original Penguin update affected about 3.1% of English queries to a degree a regular user might notice | Google Search Central | 2012 |
| More than 90% of link spam was caught by Google's systems in 2019 | Google webspam report 2019 | 2020 |
| SpamBrain identified nearly six times more spam sites in 2021 than in 2020 | Google webspam report 2021 | 2022 |
| Google detected 50 times more link spam sites than at the previous link spam update | Google webspam report 2022 | 2023 |
| The December 2022 link spam update used SpamBrain to neutralise unnatural links, took about two weeks to roll out and affected all languages | Google Search Central | 2022 |
| After the March 2024 core and spam updates, Google reported 45% less low quality, unoriginal content in results | 2024 | |
| 55.98% of SEO professionals don't think Google is good at identifying and discounting paid links | Editorial.link link building survey | 2026 |
The direction of travel is that Google mostly ignores bad links rather than penalising every site that has them, which explains why so many SEOs think paid links go unpunished. Ignored links still cost money, though, and manual actions still exist. The rules themselves are covered in link schemes, and since 2019 Google has treated nofollow, sponsored and ugc as hints, as explained in dofollow vs nofollow.
Statistics we left out
A few numbers appear on almost every list like this one, but didn't survive checking.
| Widely quoted claim | Why it isn't on this page |
|---|---|
| "79.7% of SEOs say link building is important", "93.8% value quality over quantity" and "52.3% say it's the hardest part of SEO", credited to Authority Hacker's survey of 755 link builders | None of these figures appear in that survey, which is now only available as an archived copy |
| "The average outreach link costs $361", credited to Authority Hacker | $361.44 is Ahrefs' average for paid niche edits, from a separate study |
| A 2025 survey of 518 SEOs credited to Aira | The 518 respondent survey is Editorial.link's |
| "The average backlink costs $508.95" | That is the price SEOs said they would find acceptable, not what they paid |
| Guest posts at $220 and link insertions at $141 | Older BuzzStream figures, since replaced by the 2026 numbers above |

The short version
- Links still correlate strongly with rankings, but the typical top 10 page has a median of only 6 referring domains to the URL, far fewer than averages suggest
- Average prices run from $83 for a paid link fee to $597 per digital PR link, and in one vendor database only about 1.37% of guest post sites met a basic quality bar
- Most outreach emails get no reply, and short, relevant pitches with one follow-up get the most responses
- Guest posting was the most used tactic in 2022, but in 2026 digital PR is the one SEOs rate most effective
- For AI visibility, brand mentions correlate far more strongly than backlinks, while AI Overviews still cite pages that rank
- Google mostly neutralises link spam rather than penalising it, and says so in its own reports
